President Obama called the $85 billion in automatic cuts "arbitrary", and said Republicans could have stopped them. "It's happening because a choice that Republicans in Congress have made. They've allowed these cuts to happen because they refuse to budge on closing a single wasteful loophole to help reduce the deficit." Mr. Obama met early Friday with Congressional leaders, Speaker of the House John Boehner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, both Republicans, and on the Democratic sides, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The meeting lasted less than an hour. No agreement was reached. Mr. Obama wants to reduce the deficit by combining targeted spending cuts with increased tax revenues from closed loopholes. Republicans oppose more taxes. After the meeting, Speaker Boehner said the president got his tax increases in January, and the focus now must be on cutting spending. "This discussion about revenue, in my view, is over. It's about taking on the spending problem here in Washington."
