The front drive axle assembly transfers power from the differential to the hubs andwheels of the vehicle,shown in Fig. 9. 13.
Most modern front drive axle assemblies consist of two or three separate shafts andtwo universal joints. This enables the assembly to transfer power smoothly as the frontwheels move up and down over bumps and from side-to-side while turning.
Front drive axle turns much slower than a drive shaft from a rear-wheel-drive vehicle.They turn about one-third the speed of a rear drive shaft. They are connected directly tothe drive wheels and do not have to act through the reduction of the rear axle ring andpinion gears.
