      A recent news report must be very alarming that an old drunken man fell down at the crossroad but no passerby ever tried to pull him to his feet or moved him to a safe place. In the end, he was crashed to death by a car.    What caused the tragedy? The loss of mutual trust especially among strangers should be largely blamed for the accident.
      The loss of mutual trust is an obstacle to a harmonious society, to say nothing of its immediate damaging effect. More crimes may happen considering no one will stand out to say No to illegal attempts, because people without mutual trust are always cautious and tend to protect themselves from any possible risk. Children who are brought up to be suspicious of others will become hesitant about helping others. Accordingly, our society would turn into a place of coldness and indifference.
     In order to develop mutual trust, people should be educated to believe that a harmonious society is necessary for one's happiness, which depends on mutual trust and cooperation. Chinese mass media could direct people's attention to the bright side of life and give more coverage of sincerity and kindness typical of human nature. With an increasing number of people realizing the problem of loss of mutual trust, it is time to overcome our hesitation and change for a better society
