Fort William is situated the the West Highlands. This area of Scotland is renowned for its mountainous beauty and attracts visitors seeking outdoor pursuits.
John stayed at the Great Glen Waterpark near Fort William, which is a log cabin style mini resort, with its own loch, specialising in water-sports. The waterpark is situated on the shores of Loch Oich, one of the three Great Glen lochs in the area and set in some of the finest scenery of the Highlands.
It's a comfortable resort, with all the amenities and a good range of exciting sports on offer. From the many different activities available, John tried his hand at water skiing, jet skiing, banana-boating and white-water rafting, all with close supervision from qualified instructors.
For a more relaxed way of experiencing the loch and taking in your surroundings, a boat trip is a great option. You can get a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains, including Ben Nevis, Britain's highest.
Walk or cycle
There's no pressure to try everything at once, and if you feel like getting your feet back on dry land again, there are many beautiful walks to take around the surrounding glens.
If you want something a little faster paced there are also bikes available to hire and you can take advantage of the numerous cycle routes in the park. The food here is simple and fresh. Seafood, as you would expect, features highly on the menus.
Although nightlife can be limited in this rural area, the locals certainly know how to liven up a night at the pub, with live music and singing being a fairly regular occurrence, though joining in is fortunately not compulsory.
The trip also included a visit to Bonnie Prince Charlie's Monument in Glenfinnan. The monument was errected in 1815 to commemorate the moment Bonnie Prince Charlie launched the 1745 Jacobite rising, the last Scottish campaign on English soil.
