Adolescent Issues
Adolescence is an unsettling stage during which adolescents go through fundamental physical and psychological change. Some teens are at high risk for such behaviors as depression, dropping out of school, drug/ alcohol/tobacco use, violence and schools experience serious problems because of student behaviors.
Teen depression
Depression can be a transient response to many situations and stresses. In adolescents, depressed mood is common because of the normal maturation process, the stress associated with it, the influence of sex hormones, and independence conflicts with parents.
It may also be a reaction to a disturbing event, such as the death of a friend or relative, a breakup with a boyfriend or girlfriend, or failure at school. Adolescents, who have low self-esteem, are highly self-critical, and who feel little sense of control over negative events are particularly at risk to become depressed when they experience stressful events.
Unrealistic academic, social or family expectations can create a strong sense of rejection and can lead to deep disappointment. When things go wrong at school or at home, teens often overreact. Many young people feel that life is not fair or that things never go their way. They feel stressed out and confused. To make matters worse, teens are bombarded by conflicting messages from parents, friends and society. Today's teens see more of what life has to offer both good and bad on television, at school, in magazines and on the Internet.
Drugs, alcohol, and tobacco abuse
Substance abuse is especially harmful to our youth. Youth's immature physical and psychological development makes them more susceptible than adults to the harmful effects of substance abuse. Behavior patterns that result from teen and preteen drug/ alcohol abuse often produce tragic consequences. Self-degradation, loss of control, disruptive conduct, and antisocial attitudes can cause untold harm to juveniles and their families.
School bully and violence
Bullying includes a wide variety of behaviors, but all involve a person or a group repeatedly trying to harm someone who is weaker or more vulnerable. It can involve direct attacks (such as hitting, threatening or intimidating, maliciously teasing and taunting, name-calling, making sexual remarks, and stealing or damaging belongings) or more subtle, indirect attacks (such as spreading rumors or encouraging others to reject or exclude someone).
