Fig. 9.4 shows the basic parts of manual transmission.
Transmission input shaft - operated by the clutch,it turns the gears inside thetransmission
Transmission gears - provide a means of changing output torque and speed. It canbe divided into four groups:input shaft gear, countershaft gear, reverse idler gearand output shaft gear. The input shaft gear turns the countershaft gears. Thecountershaft gears turn the output shaft gears and reverse idle gear
Synchronizers - devices for meshing gears into engagement. It has two functions:preventing the gears from clashing during engagement,and locking the output gearto the output shaft
Shift linkage - arms or rods that connect the shift lever to the shift forks
Gear shift lever - lever allowing the driver to change transmission gears
Output shaft - shaft that transfers rotating power out of the transmission to driveshaft
Transmission case - housing that encloses transmission shafts,gears,andlubricating oil
