Halloween is a festival celebrated on October 31st. The name of the holiday means “hallowed” or “holy evening” because it happens the day before All Saints’ Day.
It is said that Halloween is the children’s New Year’s Eve. They dress up(化妆) with special costumes(特殊造型),they eat too much, and stay up too late celebrating.
Children go around the neighborhood wearing make-up, and dress in masks(面具)and colorful costumes. The most common costumes are witches(精灵), ghosts(鬼),skeletons(骷髅),and popular TV, movie, and storybook characters(人物).Some costumes are homemade, others are bought in stores. The children go door to door saying “trick to treat”. People give them candy, cookies, fruit, or money. Sometimes money is collected to help UNICEF(联合国儿童基金会).
Homes, stores, and classrooms are decorated in the traditional Halloween colors, orange and black. Usual decorations are witches, cats, ghosts, skeletons, and jock-o’-lanterns(南瓜灯). Jack-o’-lanterns are pumpkins(南瓜) that are carved to look like faces. They are placed on doorway entrances and in windows. Horror(恐怖) moves and ghost stories are shown on TV on this day.
Adults(成年人) and older children also celebrate Halloween with parades(游行),festivals, and costume parties. Some people create(创造) their costumes, other people rent them. Light and shadow (影子) are friends. They usually go together. We receive light every day. At the same time, we produce shadow.
Light cannot shine through you. Your body stops it from passing. There is a spot(斑点) on the ground next to you. The light cannot reach the dark spot. This is your shadow.
At noon the sun shines over your head. Your body stops very little light from reaching the ground. So your shadow is quite short.
But in early morning or late afternoon the sun is low in the sky. The light moves over more of your body. Then your shadow is quite long. Your body keeps a lot of light from reaching the ground.
We love light, especially sunlight. Without sunlight, life on earth is impossible. Most of us like to stand in the shadow of a tree in summer. But some people are afraid of their own shadow at night. Besides, he often asked Bob about things he was doing --- about what he was going to do for the summer and what he liked to do.
The thing that Bob didn’t like about grandpa was his never-ending stories about his children in California. Bob never asked to hear about California’s boyhood, but he couldn’t get away.
