When men began to climb mountains, the air high on a mountain was freezing cold. There was deep cracks(裂缝) into which a climber could fall. Roaring(咆哮的) winds and terrible storms could sweep a man off the mountainside.
At first, men did not have proper equipment(设备) to climb high mountains. They did not have ice axes(轴), ropes, or the right kind of clothing.
Later, men could not reach the top of the highest peaks(山顶) for another reason. As a man climbed higher, the air became thinner. There was less oxygen

Some people think that all wild animals are dangerous. In fact, very few of them will attack a man if he leaves them alone. If you meet a tiger or an elephant, I’m sure you would run away, but even a tiger will keep away from a man unless it is very hungry. Tigers only kill and eat men when they have grown too old and too weak to catch their usual food, such as deer and some small animals. If you see a wild elephant, perhaps you will be frightened. Elephants usually run away at once unless you attack them. Some animals get very frightened if they only smell a man. Some take no notice at all but quietly walk away. Wild animals only attack hunters when they are afraid of the hunters meaning to harm their young ones, or when the hunter shoot at them and make them angry.
